The Ahrntal Valley, nestled in the majestic mountains of South Tyrol, is a true paradise for winter sports enthusiasts - and especially for cross-country skiers. The snow-covered landscapes, perfectly groomed trails and tranquil, untouched nature make cross-country skiing here an incomparable experience. But what makes this sport so special? What is the story behind cross-country skiing and why is it a prime example of gentle winter tourism? In this blog post, we take you on a journey through the fascinating world of cross-country skiing - and show you why the Ahrntal is the perfect place for your next cross-country skiing vacation.

Cross-country skiing - a winter sport steeped in tradition

Cross-country skiing is one of the oldest winter sports in the world. Its origins go back a long way: over 5,000 years ago, people were already using wooden slats on their feet to move on snow. While alpine skiing developed in a very similar way in the mountain valleys, cross-country skiing was invented in the vast plains of Scandinavia, according to tradition. Back then it was still a means to an end - the only way to move quickly from place to place even in the depths of winter - but over the centuries it has developed into a popular sport.

Today, cross-country skiing is an integral part of winter sports and is particularly widespread in the Alpine countries, Scandinavia and North America.

There are two main techniques:

  • The classic technique in which the skier moves forward on a prepared track with parallel skis.

  • The skating technique, a more modern, dynamic variant that resembles the ice skating stride.

Both techniques have their fans - while the classic technique is particularly suitable for connoisseurs looking for a relaxing nature experience, skating appeals primarily to ambitious cross-country skiers.

After a somewhat quieter period for this sport over the last 15 years, cross-country skiing is currently experiencing a real boom again

Why cross-country skiing is becoming increasingly popular

After a high around the 90s and 2000s, the sport was quiet for a long time. The few cross-country skiers had the trails almost to themselves. Recently, however, cross-country skiing has been experiencing a real boom again - and for good reason. The sport offers numerous advantages:

Full body workout: Cross-country skiing works almost all muscle groups - legs, arms, back and torso. At the same time, the strain on the joints is low as the movement is gentle and flowing.

Cardiovascular fitness: Cross-country skiing is an excellent endurance sport that strengthens the cardiovascular system and improves overall fitness.

Recreation in nature: While other winter sports can sometimes be a bit hectic, cross-country skiing always offers peace and relaxation. You are usually surrounded by untouched landscapes.

Sustainability & gentle tourism: Cross-country skiing is one of the most sustainable winter sports. The trails are usually located in quiet parts of the village, blend harmoniously into nature and do not require any intervention in the landscape.

This is precisely why cross-country skiing plays an important role in the concept of gentle winter tourism - a tourism model that aims to offer guests an authentic experience in harmony with nature.
